In Troop NC-0413, we memorize virtues as reminders of the qualities of character God teaches us in the Bible.
A Trailman is:
Prudent
A Trailman applies right reason to practice. To take counsel carefully with oneself and from others; to judge correctly on the basis of the evidence at hand; to direct the rest of one’s activity according to the norms determined after a prudent judgment has been made.
Proverbs 13:16; In everything the prudent acts with knowledge, but a fool flaunts his folly.
Proverbs 14:8, 15; The wisdom of the prudent is to discern his way…, The simple believes everything, but the prudent gives thought to his steps.
Proverbs 15:22; Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed.
Prudence combats recklessness.
Diligent
A Trailman is conscientious in his actions and work. He has a decisive work ethic, is unwavering in belief and the capability of not giving up, upholding his convictions at all times.
Proverbs 6:6-11; Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise.
Diligence combats sloth.
Generous
A Trailman gives of his time and resources, freely and without request for commendation.
Psalm 37:21b; but the righteous is generous and gives;
Generosity combats greed.
Temperate
A Trailman exercises self-control and moderation in all areas of his life. He practices abstention, moderation and deferred gratification.
Proverbs 25:28; A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.
Temperance combats gluttony / self-gratification.
Chaste
A Trailman embraces moral wholesomeness and purity, and in both thought and action treats God’s gift of sexuality with due reverence and respect.
Exodus 20:14; Thou shall not commit adultery.
1 Thessalonians 4:3-5; For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor,
Chastity combats lust.
Patient
A Trailman patiently seeks appropriate resolution to conflict and injustice, while focusing on the ability to forgive and show mercy.
Romans 12:12, 14; Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.
Patience combats anger.
Kind
A Trailman is unselfish and voluntarily acts without bias or spite. He has a positive outlook and cheerful demeanor. He inspires kindness in others.
Ephesians 4:32; Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
Kindness combats malice.
Humble
A Trailman’s humility clears a path for holiness. Humility is about modest behavior, selflessness and the giving of respect.
James 4:10; Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
1 Peter 5:5; Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
Humility combats pride.
Just
A Trailman gives everyone his or her rightful due, striving to be impartial in his actions.
James 2:1-9; My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, “You sit here in a good place,” while you say to the poor man, “You stand over there,” or, “Sit down at my feet,” have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him? But you have dishonored the poor man. Are not the rich the ones who oppress you, and the ones who drag you into court? Are they not the ones who blaspheme the honorable name by which you were called? If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well. But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.
Justice combats injustice.
Content
A Trailman’s character is free from the love of material possessions, being content with what God has provided to him, not coveting what others may have.
Exodus 20:17; You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.
Contentment combats envy.
Pious
A Trailman is faithful in his religious duty to God so that he may give glory to God in all his actions.
Exodus 20: 1-10; And God spoke all these words, saying, “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates.
Piety combats self-righteousness.
